Stokes Energy served as the controls and electrical engineering partner for this 100 MW / 400 MWh AC-coupled battery energy storage system at the AES Alamitos Energy Center in Long Beach, CA. Our scope included full power plant controls design, electrical engineering, and hands-on commissioning of one of the largest grid-scale BESS installations in California at the time.

Deployed in the CAISO market, the system provides frequency regulation, energy arbitrage, and var support — critical grid services for the California grid. Stokes continues to provide ongoing remote support, augmentation services, and controls upgrades, maintaining a long-term operational relationship with the site.

Stokes Energy served as the EMS and commissioning partner across a 10-site DC-coupled solar + storage portfolio spanning New York and Massachusetts, developed by Borrego and integrated with Fluence battery systems. Our scope covered EMS programming, on-site commissioning, engineering support, and ongoing O&M across all sites.

Each site pairs a utility-scale solar field with a DC-coupled BESS — Fluence LG and Samsung battery systems paired with Power Electronics inverters. Stokes delivered consistent EMS configuration and commissioning execution across all 10 locations, establishing a long-term operational relationship with the portfolio.

Stokes Energy serves as Prime EPC and part owner of this 6 MW / 12 MWh front-of-meter BESS co-located with a data center facility in Buchanon, Virginia. Our scope covers full electrical design, procurement, EMS integration, commissioning, and a 5-year O&M agreement with revenue sharing through 2031.

The project pairs grid-scale battery storage with on-site data center loads, enabling peak shaving, demand response, and DC UPS functionality. Stokes is partnered with Silicon Foundation for the data center operations.

Stokes Energy delivered a full EMS/BMS platform, electrical design, installation, and commissioning for this 5 MW / 10 MWh seamless transfer microgrid at Genentech’s pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Portland, Oregon. The system provides critical power quality and backup power to ensure uninterrupted operations for sensitive biotech processes.

Partnered with 127 Energy, Stokes designed and deployed the controls architecture using CATL battery containers and SMA string inverters, and continues to provide 24/7 remote monitoring and ongoing O&M services.

Stokes Energy designed, programmed, and continues to operate a fully integrated resilience microgrid at a military ammunition compound in Brunswick, North Carolina — combining solar PV, battery energy storage, and natural gas/diesel generators under a single custom EMS.

The system coordinates all three generation sources in real time. Solar provides primary daytime generation, the BESS handles peak shaving, load shifting, and seamless transfer during grid events, and the on-site generators serve as firm backup capacity for extended islanding and mission-critical loads. Our EMS orchestrates automatic dispatch priority, generator start/stop sequencing, load shedding logic, and black start capability — ensuring the facility maintains uninterrupted power regardless of grid conditions.

Phase 1 deployed a 500 kW BESS in 2018. Phase 2 (2025) adds 500 kW / 1 MWh of additional storage and expanded generator integration. This is a proven reference architecture for facilities that require fuel-backed resilience alongside renewable generation — a system configuration we are now deploying across multiple new sites.

Stokes Energy designed and deployed a custom microgrid EMS to control four 4 MW diesel generators at the Conemaugh Generating Station in New Florence, Pennsylvania — a 1,872 MW coal-fired power plant and one of the largest in the PJM Interconnection.

The diesel generator array provides black start capability for the entire facility. Our EMS manages automatic generator start/stop sequencing, load pickup coordination, synchronization, and the controlled energization sequence required to bring both steam turbine units online from a complete shutdown — without relying on the external grid.

The controls platform integrates real-time monitoring of all four generators, automated dispatch logic, fault protection, and a SCADA/HMI interface that gives operators full visibility into generator status, fuel levels, output power, and black start readiness. This system ensures Conemaugh can restore generation capacity to the grid following a regional blackout event.

Stokes Energy designed and deployed a custom microgrid EMS to control four 4 MW diesel generators at the Keystone Generating Station in Shelocta, Pennsylvania — a 1,711 MW coal-fired power plant and one of the largest baseload facilities in the PJM Interconnection.

The diesel generator array provides black start capability for the entire facility. Our EMS manages automatic generator start/stop sequencing, load pickup coordination, synchronization, and the controlled energization sequence required to bring both 850 MW steam turbine units online from a complete shutdown — without relying on the external grid.

Built as a sister deployment to our Conemaugh black start system, the Keystone controls platform delivers the same proven architecture: real-time monitoring of all four generators, automated dispatch logic, fault protection, and a full SCADA/HMI interface. Together, these two installations demonstrate Stokes Energy’s capability to deliver black start EMS solutions at the largest scale of conventional generation.

Stokes Energy was selected by CMTA as EPC Partner and Electrical Engineer of Record for a 4 MW / 10 MWh DC-coupled microgrid at Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) in Columbia, SC.

Our scope includes full IFC stamped microgrid electrical engineering design, procurement consulting (BABA, domestic content, non-FEOC compliant BESS, inverters & converters), custom microgrid EMS, airport power distribution tie-in design & interconnection, system metering, networking & critical electronic components, advanced commissioning, and 5-year O&M post-COD.

Stokes Energy's Charleston lab serves as the foundation for developing next-generation custom energy management software and testing integrations with the grid. Located at 4500 Leeds Avenue in North Charleston, the facility is purpose-built to advance Stokes' proprietary EMS platform and validate real-world grid interconnection scenarios.

The lab features an innovative immersion-cooled container, enhancing efficiency in contemporary data center practices. This cooling approach represents a significant advancement in data center infrastructure design, allowing Stokes to test and refine high-density computing environments while minimizing energy overhead and maximizing thermal performance.

As both an R&D facility and operational data center, the Leeds Avenue lab gives Stokes direct, hands-on experience with the same power distribution, cooling, and controls challenges faced by commercial data center clients — ensuring that every solution deployed in the field has been proven in-house first.

Stokes Energy provided the complete electrical engineering package for Compass Mining's 12 MW modular containerized data center facility in Oklahoma. Compass Mining operates large-scale hosting infrastructure serving high-performance computing clients with professional-grade facilities and competitive power rates. Stokes was responsible for site origination, utility interconnection design, and full electrical system engineering for the high-density containerized operation.

As Electrical Engineer of Record, Stokes led the interconnection process with the local utility, designing the medium-voltage distribution and transformer infrastructure to reliably serve the 12 MW facility. The containerized deployment model — with dozens of modular data center units — required precise coordination of power distribution, load balancing, and protection systems to ensure continuous uptime across the site.

Stokes also provided procurement support to optimize transformer, switchgear, and cabling sourcing, along with commissioning support to verify all electrical systems performed to specification before energization. This project represents Stokes Energy's expanding capability in high-power modular data center infrastructure and large-scale electrical interconnection.

Stokes Energy provides turnkey design, assembly, testing, and delivery of manufacturing test benches for EPC Power’s inverter product line being built in Greenville, SC. With a significant backlog of inverter orders, EPC engaged Stokes to build and deliver multiple test cells and assembly line equipment from our North Charleston facility — strengthening South Carolina’s power electronics manufacturing capability.

EPC and Stokes have worked together since 2019, beginning with the Brunswick project where the first three CAB 1000 inverters were installed alongside the Stokes Energy Management System. Since then, Stokes has completed commissioning, reactive, and remote support for EPC’s deployed fleet. This manufacturing partnership is the next evolution — Stokes provides electrical controls engineering, low-voltage and high-voltage panel assembly, backplane wiring, and full factory acceptance testing for each unit.

Each test bench undergoes a comprehensive FAT protocol including 120V and 480V power checks, auxiliary and gigavac contactor cycling, safety curtain verification, DC bus contactor testing, DC and AC power testing, and Dani Sense CT validation. Stokes delivers complete documentation packages and handles procurement at cost-plus, with full engineering drawings and work instructions included in the deliverable.

Stokes Energy developed a 1 MW advanced power electronics test platform that eliminates conventional load banks by circulating real power through a closed-loop inverter architecture. The system uses less than 50 kW from the grid to operate at full 1 MW load, delivering massive energy savings while providing infinitely controllable test conditions for batteries, breakers, transformers, PDUs, switchgear, EV components, and data center equipment.

Built around EPC Power’s voltage-forming and voltage-following inverters connected at the DC bus of an active front end, the system supports bi-directional real and reactive four-quadrant operation. Advanced test sequences including frequency oscillations, voltage range simulation, and reactive power injection can all be achieved while circulating real power — making it quieter, more compact, and far more capable than traditional resistive load banks.

The platform features an open-source PLC-based control system with an application-specific test and reporting environment developed by Stokes. Integration is supported via OPC UA, Modbus, CAN, and Profinet, with optional Bender, HIOKI, and SEL metering equipment. Available in grid-connected or mobile generator-run configurations, this system represents Stokes’ capability in advanced power electronics product development.

Stokes Energy is the exclusive EPC contractor and EMS provider for the redevelopment of the Centre Foundry site in Wheeling, WV — a 60,000 sq ft industrial facility on 15 acres with a 69kV substation and 10 MW grid connection already on-site, located one hour from Pittsburgh in the PJM Interconnection. The site sits adjacent to a natural gas pipeline and river cooling access, with environmental permitting complete for both Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Phase 1 deploys a front-of-meter 10 MW BESS paired with a grid- and BESS-powered data center, operated under a cost-of-work plus fixed fee contract structure. Stokes is responsible for full electrical and civil engineering design, PJM interconnection studies, 69kV substation design, procurement, construction management, and deployment of the Stokes EMS for real-time asset dispatch, energy arbitrage, and utility reporting.

Phase 2 scales to 50 MW BESS and adds natural gas CCHP generation to support uninterruptible AI and GPU compute workloads. The site's industrial-grade infrastructure and proximity to major load centers position it as a high-margin, vertically integrated energy and compute asset.
